Preliminary Assessment

Preliminary Assessment

This process is often referred to as ‘longlisting’ and ‘shortlisting.’ Both of these terms imply a process through which applications are assessed, and a group of candidates is invited for final assessment. It involves an initial review of applications to identify potential candidates, followed by a more detailed evaluation to shortlist suitable applicants for further interviews. This step is crucial in ensuring only the most appropriate candidates proceed to the next stage.

Be clear on the methods to be used and the purpose of this stage in the process. Provide candidates with clear guidance that they are being invited to participate in first, not final, assessment and when they will be informed of the outcome.

Agreements on assessment methods can include telephone or video interviews, but other forms may be appropriate. For academic posts, a presentation might be required to evaluate skills more thoroughly.

If you include a long-listing stage ensure all scores given are kept and are incorporated into your overall decision making process after assessment, particularly person specific items that haven’t been assessed after long-listing.
